Basic Bass Guitar Information

A base guitar is an electric string instrument that is similar with a guitar but only has four strings. These strings are the lowest 4 strings of a basic guitar. It is played by plucking, strumming or slapping the strings with a pick or with your fingers.

There are different kinds of bass guitars. Here’s a list:

  • Solid body - these are made with wood that resembles the look of a guitar. There is no open chamber and the magnetic sensors on its strings are the ones responsible for producing sound. It has a flexible tone and can play all types of music.
  • Hollow-body - this instrument has a chamber where sounds resonate. They have the same f-shape sound holes similar to a violin. The sound from a hollow body guitar comes out full, dark and with less treble. One disadvantage of using this type of bass guitar is that it tends to produce feedbacks on higher volumes.
  • Semi-hollow- this is more tolerable to feedbacks because of its hollow sides and solid center. They are often used to play R&B music.
  • Acoustic- this is much similar with an acoustic guitar. It is also often referred to as flat top. It used to play acoustic music and can be used even without an electric amplifier.
  • Short scale- the scale of this bass instrument is rather short. It only measures about 30 inches, which is much smaller than the standard bass neck length of 34 inches. Because the strings are shorter, the tension of the strings goes lower and thus, making it easier to use. But because of the lower tension strings, there is less resonance and it can’t deliver a full tone.
  • Neck through- these are made with solid and large wood. With such a make up, it produces greater resonance. It can give a full tonal range that is best for a variety of music.
  • Fretless- this one is a regular bass guitar without the frets. I can create a fluid sound but is best used by professional musicians.
  • Five string and six string- a five string bass guitar has an extra low note string. A six string bass has two extra strings, one low note and a higher note.
